When is strawberry picking season? Dates by region

Updated Nov 2026 Β· 3 min read Β· By the U-Pick Near team

Quick answer

Short version: in most of the US, strawberry picking is in late spring to early summer and lasts only a few weeks for June-bearing plants. Florida picks in winter and early spring, the mid-South in April and May, and northern states like Michigan and Minnesota from about mid June into July.

When does strawberry season start in each region?

  • Florida: winter into early spring.
  • Southeast and California: spring, often starting in March or April.
  • Mid-Atlantic: May into June.
  • Upper Midwest and Northeast: MSU Extension puts Michigan June-bearers from mid June through July.

Weather moves these dates every year. A warm spring can start picking a week or two early, and frost can delay it.

How long does strawberry season last?

June-bearing varieties, the type most u-pick fields grow, give one main crop over a few weeks. Everbearing and day-neutral types keep producing into fall, so some farms offer a smaller second picking. Call or check the farm's social pages: many post daily picking reports.
