When is maple sugaring season, and can you visit a sugarhouse?
Short version: maple sugaring season is late winter, typically Feb to Mar, and in New England it often runs from late February into early April. Sap runs when nights freeze and days thaw, so call the sugarhouse the day you plan to visit to ask if they are boiling.
When does maple season start?
UNH Extension says New Hampshire sugaring can begin in late February and run into early April, and it can stop and start in between. The Massachusetts Maple Producers Association notes the best sap flows come with nights in the low 20s and days in the 40s. A long warm or cold spell stops the flow.
Can you watch syrup being made?
Often yes, but boiling depends on the weather. Sap must be boiled soon after it is collected, so producers cannot set a schedule far ahead. Many sugarhouses try to boil on weekends; call that morning.
Is there maple sugaring outside the Northeast?
Yes. WSU Extension describes a bigleaf maple season in western Washington that can run from late November to early March. Midwest states such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio also have sugarbushes.
