More tips: your first u-pick visit.
How to pick like a pro
- Is it ripe?
Cut flowers just as they open: sunflowers when the petals start to lift, zinnias when the stem is stiff right under the bloom, lavender when a third to half the buds are open.
- How to pick
Use clean, sharp snips and cut stems long and at an angle. Put them in water right away if the farm has buckets.
- Best time to go
Early morning or evening, when stems are full of water.
- Keep it fresh
Recut stems at home and change the water every couple of days.
